Description

Tartan belongs to Blunt Blades, a body of work I began in 2013 when Bedfordshire Police gave me crates of surrendered and seized knives. Each ring is made from the stainless steel of those blades, ground, burnt and forged into a new form, yet still carrying the history of the objects it came from.

Its surface is laser etched with a tartan pattern, a structure that has long coded identity, clan and belonging. Here it is pressed into metal with its own history of violence, a material that has served both as tool and as weapon. Worn on the body, the ring offers no resolution. It sits in the uneasy space between violence and protection, and asks how meaning, memory and responsibility continue to move through the materials we carry.

Twenty percent of proceeds supports Living on a Knife’s Edge, an initiative by Inspire 2 Quit Blades that shares the testimonies of young men imprisoned for knife crime to challenge the glamour around it.

Limited edition of 10, numbered inside each ring.
