Description

Scrolls belongs to Blunt Blades, a body of work I began in 2013 when Bedfordshire Police gave me crates of surrendered and seized knives. Each ring is made from the stainless steel of those blades, melted down and reworked, yet still carrying the history of the objects it came from.

Its surface is engraved with a scroll pattern, the traditional decorative language found on fine metalwork and firearms, where it has long signalled craft and value. Pressed into metal with its own history of violence, the ornament takes on a different weight. The steel itself resisted, too hard to engrave by hand, and the pattern was finally laser engraved.

Worn on the body, the ring offers no resolution. It asks whether matter holds the evidence of what it once was, and what it means to carry that material forward. A Scrolls ring is held in the collection of The Goldsmiths’ Company, London.

Twenty percent of proceeds supports Living on a Knife’s Edge, an initiative by Inspire 2 Quit Blades that shares the testimonies of young men imprisoned for knife crime to challenge the glamour around it.

Limited edition of 10, numbered inside each ring. UK size S.
